Sharpie Nationals at Stone Sailing Club
27-29 May 2006 The eight-race Sharpie nationals were held at Stone Sailing Club over the May bank holiday weekend, with three races planned for Saturday, three for Sunday and two for Monday. There was an international flavour to the series with two Dutch boats competing (including the current European Champion) and one British sharpie being crewed by a German sailor. The strong winds forecast for Saturday failed to arrive, leaving the first three races sailed in light and variable conditions. The only constant was the rain! Most boats found these conditions very challenging, particularly with the strong tide at this venue. Tom Weller and Jeroen van Veen (the current European Champions) made a good start to the series by winning race one with Chris and Tim Gibbs of Wells SC (defending British Champions) hard on their heels. The second Dutch boat crewed by the Mulderij brothers came in third. Race 2 saw Chris and Tim in pole position after taking a “flyer” and reaching the top mark over 200 metres in front of the fleet, Tom and Jeroen were pushed into third place by previous champions Paddy Spink and John Ellison. Race 3 was won by Roz and Kiki Spink with Chris and Tim second and Tom and Jeroen third. This was Roz’s first win in the British Nationals; she looks like a future champion in the making. Overall Results:
Day two saw much stronger winds and some spectacular capsizes. Race 4 was for the Connaught trophy, the most coveted of the week. Traditionally a long race and often coinciding with high winds, this one did not disappoint! On the first downwind leg three boats capsized including Tom and Jeroen who missed the next race while righting and emptying their Sharpie. Six boats failed to finish the race, only one of them - the oldest competitor (71) and previous Champion Richard Cracknell, crewed by his son Ben - managed to get back in time to sail the fifth race. Races 4 and 5 were both won by Chris and Tim, and race six once again saw Tom and Jeroen cross the line first with Chris and Tim in second. The overall standing by the end of the day was that Chris and Tim could not be caught for 1st place overall, but places 2 through to 5 were still wide open. Day three's forecast was dire, with force six and squalls predicted, but despite this all 15 boats were on the water for the start of a fast and exciting race. Tom and Jeroen made a good victory with Chris and Tim just behind. James Case and Jimmy Goodley came in third. The last race of the series was cancelled as an ominous storm was brewing and the race officer sent the boats to seek shelter ashore. |
