Australian comments.

Rolly Tasker and Huck Scott of Western Australia sailing Falcan IV took, Australia's first medal in the 12m Sharpie (the forerunner of today's lightweight). Their Silver medal set Australia's Yachties alight!

Tasker was to later become Flying Dutchman World Champion.

Australia won its first two medals in yachting at these Olympics.

Yachting has been a source of Olympic gold for Australia over the years. It was also a source of frustration for Roly Tasker and John Scott, who had the gold medal in their keeping in the now defunct[!] Sharpie class at the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

In winning the final race they appeared to have won the gold medal easily but France protested and the Australians were disqualified. As a result they finished equal with the New Zealand crew on points but lost the gold on a count-back, winning the silver medal.

The final results of the 1956 Sailing Classes were as follows.
