report: Andy Turner
Seven sharpies arrived for the first open meeting of the season at Overy Staithe, three from Overy, three from Wells and one from Brancaster.
The first two races were sailed on the Saturday evening in a force 2-3 south westerly. In race 1 Richard Muldery and Alistair Ogle in NED 226 showed good boat speed, chased all the way by Ben Cracknell and Sally Wynne in GBR 2 and James Case and Jimmy Goodley in GBR 12, to finish in that order. In race 2 James Case crossed the fleet on port at the start and was never headed. Ben Cracknell finished second and Richard Muldery third, so that all three boats were on the same number of points at the end of day 1.
Races three and four were sailed early on Sunday morning in a fitful breeze, with the sea breeze trying to override the land breeze, making conditions difficult for the race officer and safety boat crew. James Case again showed a clean pair of heels to the fleet, this time chased by Jerry Clark and Bill Offord in GBR 133, and Paul Goakes and William Scoles in GBR 71, using their local knowledge to good effect.
Race 4 developed into a drag race round a triangular course on a falling tide in a developing sea breeze with Richard Muldery and James Case never more than a few boat lengths apart, chased by Jerry Clark in GBR 133 and Alex Smith and Paul Beachell in GBR 128.
