When attempting to upload images using the media gallery, only use the tab titled "Drag and Drop".

Then do NOT use the add files buttons, instead, highlight your files locally, and drag them into the window. Then press upload. This is the only way the media Gallery works. Apologies for usability issues, but at the moment, the zoom media gallery is still the best free gallery component for Joomla.
