Day one: The 31 strong fleet got away in a light and patchy north easterly:  James Case got the best of the first beat to round ahead of Chris Gibbs, but after this a war of attrition set in as the Gibbs brothers wore down Case's lead, finally overtaking on the last beat.  Light airs maestro Jerry Clark was third.  Only seven boats finished within 15 mins of the leader: the rest were timed out and scored DNF.  Only a single race was possible today: the championship continues tomorrow.  More pics: http://sharpies.org.uk/index.php?option=com_zoom&Itemid=163&catid=25

Day two of the Sharpie Nationals brought a northerly breeze: after a quick prod out to sea the race team laid a course in the harbour and ran the day's scheduled races followed by the postponed race 2 from the previous day.  The first, Race 3,  saw a runaway for the very on-form Gibbs brothers:  Martin Read and Mark Buckton in Poelsnip were second and the Nederland pair of Job Volwater and Ton van Borkel (Typhoon) were third.  Aboard Southern Cross, Charlie Borthwick and Tim Ashby had an abrupt end to the day's racing when they lost their mast, and Alex Smith and Paul Beachell in Capella attempted an audacious port tack start that went rather pear-shaped, leaving them sandwiched between the pin end mark and a vocal (but unimpressed) Dennis van Vliet in Krekwakwou.

In Race Four, as the rain increased, James Case was back in front after a very nicely judged pin end start:  Jan Pieter Braan and Jerom Leisveld in Bries with tons of downwind boat speed were second and the Gibbs brothers third.  Klaus Eisenblatter  and Steffen Wussow (Germany) in Bunyip showed a return to form with fourth ahead of Daan Versleeg and Arnold Mulderij in Jan van Galen.

Finally, Race Two, postponed from Friday, saw another win for Chris and Tim Gibbs, with the Jan van Galen crew second and Houri,  where owner Cliff Nye is chauffered by Alex Scoles, third, and Typhoon fourth. Several capsizes and retirements had trimmed the fleet to the mid twenties by this time , and as the rain carried on out of a gloomy sky, the enthusiasm for bacon and egg baps back in the steamy comfort of the clubhouse was pretty overwhelming!
Going into the final day, the Gibbs brothers are in a commanding position that they'll need to be pretty unlucky to lose (but it could still happen!).  The next few places are much more open, with James Case, Martin Read and Daan Verslaag all pretty close when you figure in a discard, and Klaus Eisenblatter, Ben Cracknell, Richard Mulderij and Alex Scoles not so far adrift.

Day Three..... dawned with only a couple of hundred yards visibility, but with a promising forecast, race officer Andy Turner got the fleet out to sea, and sure enough, there was enough visibility to set a course in a force two northerly.
James Case and Jimmy Goodley went out to port on the first beat and came out with a promising lead, only slightly marred when they were swept into the leeward mark by the eastgoing tide, a snare that surprised a good slice of the fleet who found themselves being carried the wrong side of the mark.  On the second beat it was Chris and Tim Gibbs who found the best of the pressure and came out with a lead that they held to the finish, winning the event with a race to spare. Second were James and Jimmy, third Daan Versleeg and Arnold Mulderij in Jan van Galen and fourth Job Volwater and Ton van Borkel in Typhoon.
By this time the murk was breaking up and the sky clearing, and the final race of the series was sailed in (at last!) glorious sunshine. This race was a runaway victory for Claus Eisenblatter and Steffen Wussow in Bunyip.  James Case scored yet another second and Jerry Clark and Rob Howlett made it back into the fray for a third.   The final result was a testament to the speed and consistency of Chris and Tim Gibbs against a range of opponents: all capable of going really fast, but none of whom could work that magic race after race.
